Magic is a mystical force used to bend reality to the whim of its user. Its main form is generally associated with pink or lavender but it can be associated with many other colors depending on what type of magic is being used. It has a darker side, used by the Oni, the Forbidden Five, Hazza D'ur, and later Clouse. Magic can be used by any means such as spells, potions, hexes, curses, crystal balls, and many other mystical objects and artifacts.[5] Some realms like Mysterium and Djinjago are home to different types of magic and mystical beings.
Spells tie together with magic; many of them are written in the Book of Spells. However, the book was burnt by Lloyd as a tribute to his father's sacrifice.
Particularly powerful spells can remain existent even after they have been used. Unchained spells have the ability to become self-aware and take on a physical form, but can be reset back to their original form under certain circumstances.
Misusing Djinn artifacts creates living curses called Howlers, which mercilessly hunt down their summoners.
Notable uses
Prior to the series
Before time had a name
At some point prior to or during the War of Oni and Dragon, the Arc Dragon Thunderfang used magic to grant himself the power of soul absorption. When the First Spinjitzu Master realized neither the Oni nor the dragons were interested in ending the war in the Realm of Oni and Dragons, he created a magical crystal known as the Realm Crystal with the power to create portals and left his home realm with it. He would later use a spell he created and inscribed on the Tablet of Desolation to split the Weapon of Desolation into two fragments which he hid in the Tree of Madness and Tree of Burdens.
Millennia ago
Millennia before the Ritual of the Blood Moon, the Forbidden Five would be given Elemental Powers by Thunderfang. The Five would combine their newfound powers with Theroxian, allowing them to access Theroxian Magic, a special form of Dark Magic that existed before them and became intertwined with the very primordial essence of Chaos.[6] Theroxian magic was one of the many powers used by the Forbidden Five as the group initiated a campaign of conquest upon the Wyldness after they became corrupted by the dragon's dark energy.
Hoping to stop the Forbidden Five, Egalt and Rontu sought out Gandalaria, who created a potent spell to imprison the group in the Nether-Space. The spell successfully trapped the Forbidden Five, but remained existent due to its strength.[7]
Following the Exile of the Forbidden Five, a sorcerer named Zaiden Kane traveled to the Wyldness in search of a sixth member of the Forbidden Five. When they failed to find what they were looking for, they resorted to manipulating Lord Argus into striking the Gong of Shattering with the Mallet of Shattering to curse him and the realm. As a result of the curse, Argus became a lycanthrope known as the Lycan King, whom Kane took control of by using their magic to conjure the Spectral Crown. Kane and the Lycan King were eventually defeated by the Wolf warriors who managed to avoid being cursed or petrified when they used Theroxian magic to create the Runes of Binding, which bound the Spectral Crown to the Lycan King's head and freed him from Kane's control.
Thousands of years ago, a young Serpentine sorceress, Aspheera, used her magic to free the Sons of the First Spinjitzu Master from King Mambo V's prison. When the two came home, they saw their father writing on pieces of scroll, which he deemed too dangerous for them. Later, when she overthrew Mambo V, Wu and Garmadon defeated her using the dark powers of the Scrolls of Forbidden Spinjitzu and subsequently, Mambo trapped her with a spell in the pyramid, where she could not escape.[8]
Nineko convinced herself that the only way she could be better than the First Spinjitzu Master was by becoming immortal, so she studied Dark Magic and used her new abilities to drain the life force out of the crops from Komala's village in an attempt to empower her own life force, but instead caused the crops to turn black and die. After witnessing this, Komala studied good magic and became the leader of the Order of Felis so she could stop Nineko from seeking immortality.[9]
Centuries ago
Note: These events are listed in no particular order.
During the Edo period, an order of spellcasters known as Edo Sorcerers rose to prominence in southern Ninjago. The order's members and acolytes practiced an unstable type of dark magic called Edo magic ("Earth magic" when translated from the Old Tongue) that drew from the Elemental Power of Earth. To wield their magic more efficiently, the Edo Sorcerers invented a new form of architecture that concentrated the latent elemental energy of Earth in Ninjago into reservoirs that they could channel. Ultimately, the unstable nature of Edo magic became its wielders' downfall, with a majority of the order being wiped out. All that was left of the Edo Sorcerers was their relics and architecture, such as the Temple of Airjitzu. The teachings of Edo magic would be preserved by the few survivors of the order and passed down through dwindling generations until their legacy would be inherited centuries later by Clouse, the last living descendant of the original Edo Sorcerers.[10]
While searching for the key to immortality, Master Yang's studies led him to discover the Yin Blade. Experimenting with its mystical life-giving properties, he used it to resurrect several deceased samples of flora, before attempting to use its magic on himself in order to achieve immortality. However, the experiment was flawed and instead, it resulted in him and his students becoming ghosts, trapped between the realms of the living and departed and unable to leave the Temple of Airjitzu. Before losing the Yin Blade, Yang's ghost would use the weapon to bind the ghosts of his students to his will. The Yin Blade would eventually find its way to the Ninjago Museum of History, where it was placed in a container of pure Clearstone.[11]
Two hundred years ago, Nadakhan left Djinjago and became a pirate in Ninjago. With the help of wish magic, he fulfilled several creatures' wishes, forcing them to become part of his crew. Among the wishes he granted were Dogshank wishing to stand out, Doubloon trying to wish his way out of his sentence when he was caught trying to steal Nadakhan's gold, and Monkey Wretch wishing to be the greatest mechanic of his kind, but was instead turned into a mechanical monkey.[12]
Centuries before the Battle for Shintaro Mountain, a powerful sorcerer named Hazza D'ur fled from Mysterium for his practice of Necromancy, an advanced form of Dark Magic that can reanimate the dead under the user's control, and created a city inside Shintaro Mountain using Dark Magic. At one point after that, he was vanquished, but the Dark Magic still remained in his skull, allowing his soul to persist.[13]
Decades ago
More than forty years ago, when Garmadon trained with Clouse in Chen's monastery, Clouse used Dark Magic to bring the training equipment to life but was defeated by Garmadon using Spinjitzu.[14]
After manipulating Asa into destroying the Runes of Binding with Shatterspin, Zaiden Kane retook control of the Lycan King and pursured him and Garmadon to the Shadow Dojo while attacking them with their magic. In the dojo, Kane attempted to defend themself against Asa when he unlocked the full power of Shatterspin but Asa was quicker and managed to claim and destroy the Spectral Crown, resulting in a magic explosion which killed him, Kane, and the Lycan King and undid the curse on the Wyldness.
Shortly after the Serpentine War, Garmadon used the Book of Spells to banish the Anacondrai generals to the Cursed Realm.[14]
Around fifteen or twenty years ago, when a fully-corrupted Garmadon almost defeated Wu, the symbols on the First Spinjitzu Master's kimono worn by Wu began to glow and shot a large strip of Good Magic into the sky, which subsequently opened the Underworld where Garmadon was banished to.[15]
Some years ago, Vangelis learned that the Dungeons of Shintaro housed a powerful artifact of Dark Magic, the Skull of Hazza D'ur, and therefore tasked the Lowly with retrieving it so it could be destroyed and keep Shintaro safe.
The adventurers managed to overcome all the traps and enter the restricted cave, where Hazza D'ur's skull was placed on a pedestal under a large statue. Korgran tried to take the skull with his hands, but it immediately came to life and tried to transform him with Dark Magic. However, Korgran managed to drop the skull and it remained dormant. Later, when Vangelis took the skull, Hazza D'ur's soul then activated in the skull again and began to laugh with Vangelis.[16]
Over the following years, Vangelis began using the skull's power and reanimated the deceased warriors to enslave the Munce and Geckles, who were forced to mine Vengestone for him in the Mines of Shintaro.[16]
Tournament of Elements
Clouse used dark magic in attempt to sabotage the Ninja, once when he animated the Anacondrai symbol on the carpet, which then caught Lloyd's leg and held him. However, Garmadon jumped on Clouse and disrupted his spell. Clouse used magic against Jay to create a stone mech from the surrounding material. When fighting Garmadon for the last time, the sorcerer used an Edo incantation to open a portal to the Cursed Realm, where he tried to banish Garmadon, but was defeated and banished instead.
Later, Kapau and Chope performed the Spell of Transformation from the Book of Spells to turn themselves, their master, and the rest of the Anacondrai Cultists into Anacondrai.
When Pythor brought the Book of Spells to the Destiny's Bounty, Lloyd used a spell to banish Garmadon to the Cursed Realm to release the Anacondrai generals from their imprisonment, who proceeded to curse Chen and his army.
Possession
Yang utilized Spectral Magic to test the ninja upon their entry into the Temple of Airjitzu. As an example, he orchestrated the shaking of door handles, causing water to flow from a painting of the sea, created an illusion of Morro, and transported the entire temple to the Ethereal Divide. After the successful escape of the ninja, except for Cole, Yang's magic transformed the Earth Ninja into a ghost.
While Wu, Nya, and Misako were situated at the Endless Sea near the Tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master, Bansha employed Spectral Magic to control Misako and engage in combat against Wu through her proxy. However, Nya intervened and disrupted her spell.
Morro stole the Allied Armor of Azure to summon his ghost warriors to aid him before he claimed the Realm Crystal. Morro then found the Sword of Sanctuary to use to find the Tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master.
Skybound
After Nadakhan was released from the Teapot of Tyrahn, he granted Clouse's three wishes which were to recover his Book of Spells, become human again, and make the pain go away, which resulted in him getting trapped in the teapot. He later did the same for many of the other Ninja. Although this time, he trapped them in the Djinn Blade.
After obtaining infinite wishes, Nadakahn used his newfound powers to create dozens of duplicates of himself. When he was then called out by Clancee, who had realized that the ceremony was only for himself, the Djinn banished him, Doubloon, and Monkey Wretch.
With the place to himself, Nadakhan wished that Delara would return to Nya's body. He then tried to impress her with his wishes, but the Ninja interrupted. In the fight, Nadakhan used his newfound magic wish to turn most of them to gold. When Flintlocke shot him with the Tiger Widow venom, it caused his powers to disappear, making the new Djinjago fall on Ninjago and Delara's consciousness disappear from Nya's body.
Dark Island Trilogy
Clouse used dark magic when he ambushed Wu. He then explained his intentions, where he freed Nadakhan's crew from their imprisonment in separate realms before using it again to blackmail them into joining him. Clouse blasted Kai with a burst of dark magic and later summoned a sandstorm, separating the ninja from him and the pirates as they escaped.
When Clouse brought all the Dark Matter he needed to the Temple of Light, he summons an army of Shadows to defend his plans alongside the Sky Pirates and caused the Dark Island and Ninjago to slowly merge in order to infect both worlds with pure evil. He then formed a shadow barrier to protect the Dark Matter trove, only for Master Wu, now armed with the repaired Golden Mech, to break through.
Frustrated, Clouse proceeded to summon his army of Shadows to him, forming a duplicate shadow mech. Despite his efforts, however, the blade of his shadow mech would be shattered, even as Wu used the Golden Mech to once again disperse the Dark Matter and cleanse the Temple of Light. With the islands now returning to their original positions, a portal formed above Clouse, sucking him in. Despite Wu's offer to save and redeem him, Clouse, blinded by his fury, refused by stating that he'd prefer to die than be saved by Wu, and surrendered to the vortex.
Day of the Departed
After snatching the Yin Blade, Cole headed straight for the Temple of Airjitzu to confront Yang with the weapon. In his rush to attack, Cole accidentally broke a jar that served as an exit from the Departed Realm, freeing the spirits of several villains: Samukai, Kozu, Cryptor, Chen, Morro, Eyezor, Zugu, three Nindroid Warriors, two Stone Swordsmen, and two Stone Scouts. The unleashed souls wreaked havoc all over Ninjago by possessing their own mannequins at the Ninjago Museum of History.
With the spirits of past villains causing chaos, the rest of the ninja were kept busy and distracted. Taking advantage of this, Yang managed to snatch the weapon from Cole with the help of his deceased students. He went on to explain his plan of using Dark Magic from the eclipse to amplify the powers of the Yin Blade and create a portal to escape his state of limbo.
Now in possession of the Yin Blade, Yang made his way up to the roof of his temple and activated the artifact. Using its reality-bending powers, he opened the Rift of Return. However, a determined Cole confronted Yang and the two engaged in a battle. In an attempt to defend himself, Yang used the Yin Blade to slice through Cole's weapon. Despite the setback, Cole's friends arrived to support him, and he unleashed his RX powers to strike back at Yang. In a bid to protect himself, Yang wielded the Yin Blade. But he couldn't withstand the punch, and Cole's attack shattered the Yin Blade. With the destruction of the Yin Blade and the Yin-Yang Eclipse coming to an end, the Rift of Return was forced to close.
Way of the Departed
Sons of Garmadon
The Sons of Garmadon utilized the Oni Masks to resurrect Lord Garmadon. Mr. E and Killow used their Oni Mask of Deception and Oni Mask of Vengeance to battle the Ninja. After finding the Oni Mask of Hatred within the Oni Temple, Harumi attempted to grab it, but since it was protected by Oni Sorcery, she couldn't touch it. She then explained to Lloyd that only someone with Oni blood can obtain the mask.
Hunted
Skylor found the Mask of Hatred and suggests that if Lloyd's power doesn't return, then it might help him. Mystake warns Lloyd about the dangers of using the mask as "Oni power is Dark Magic." Skylor asks for his choice of using it. Lloyd goes back in and throws it in front of Harumi.
After Mystake transformed into her true Oni form, she summoned a staff using Dark Magic to form a black cloud, giving Skylor enough time to copy Garmadon's Destruction.
Ultra Violet was holding the Mask of Hatred while calling for a ride when she soon discovers Lloyd, Nya, and Dareth escaping with an unconscious Skylor. Ultra Violet used the mask to finish off Nya but Lloyd and Dareth arrive in their armored vehicle, ramming into the invulnerable Ultra Violet and sending her flying into a brick wall. When Ultra Violet emerges from the debris, the mask breaks apart, falling off of her face.
March of the Oni
The Oni used Oni Sorcery to spread darkness throughout Ninjago City, with its tentacles petrifying anyone who were touched by them. The clouds of Oni Sorcery were under the Bounty when it was flying above Ninjago City and they were also in Borg Tower when Lloyd and his father walked through to get to the Realm Crystal. The Omega used Oni Sorcery to summon more Oni, forcing Garmadon and Lloyd to retreat. Soon, P.I.X.A.L. dived into the clouds to help them.
Meanwhile, trying to save anyone left from the clouds, Cole fell in and the clouds surrounded him. When Cole woke up, he tried to run through the clouds to get to the Earth Driller. He almost fell ill to it but made it out in time.
Later, when the ninja, Garmadon, Faith, and Wu retreated from the Oni, clouds of Oni Sorcery climbed over the monastery walls.
Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu
Aspheera was released from her pyramid and began to seek revenge on Wu for leaving her there. With her magic, she managed to extract the Elemental Power of Fire from Kai and chained him and the other ninja up before causing the pyramid to erupt with lava. By creating Fire Fang and the Elemental Cobras, Aspheera was able to acquire one of the Forbidden scrolls and launch an attack on the Monastery of Spinjitzu with an army of Pyro Vipers, who were brought back to life with her magic and Fire. Aspheera used the magical abilities of her staff and the Forbidden scroll to banish any defense weapons in her path and confront Wu. However, Zane intervenes, causing him to be banished to the Never-Realm.
Later, P.I.X.A.L. used Aspheera's staff, with the Forbidden scroll attached to it, to channel the scroll's dark powers to send the Ninja and the Land Bounty to the Never-Realm.
Master of the Mountain
During their time in Shintaro Mountain, the ninja encountered the Skull Sorcerer and Hazza D'ur. The latter revived the Re-Awakened each time the ninja vanquished them, thereby granting the sorcerer an advantage. As a result, the ninja were forced to toil in the Dungeons of Shintaro alongside the Geckles and Munce to mine Vengestone. However, they eventually managed to escape, and Cole reunited with Wu and Vania. Together, the three discovered that Vangelis was the Skull Sorcerer, who revealed the Skull of Hazza D'ur to them. Vangelis used the magic relic to knock away Cole and Wu, revealing it was the source of his power. Wu realized they had to destroy the skull to defeat Vangelis.
When the ninja were persuading the Geckles and Munce to attend a truce meeting, Vangelis used the Skull of Hazza D'ur's necromancy to reanimate Grief-Bringer. The dragon and the Re-Awakened then trapped the ninja, Geckles, and Munce in the Geckle Strong-Cave until the ninja were forced to turn themselves in. This allowed Vangelis and Hazza D'ur to recapture both the Geckles and Munce.
Eventually, in the Battle for Shintaro Mountain, Cole confronted Vangelis. In the battle, Hazza D'ur used his magic to revive the Re-Awakened and battle Cole until he destroyed the Blades of Deliverance. The Skull of Hazza D'ur was then used to overwhelm Cole until the Earth Ninja unlocked the Spinjitzu Burst and destroyed the ancient artifact. This action destroyed Vangelis' source of power and reverted the reanimated skeletons back to bones.
Crystalized
When Aspheera was given her staff, she used her magic to turn Nya back. However, the sorceress, blinded by revenge, tried to kill the ninja, although she was eventually forced to use the staff to deprive Nya her powers. As a result of a shockwave occurring, Aspheera lost possession of her staff once more. When a Crystal Spider visited Aspheera in her pyramid, it gave her a new staff with a purple handle.
When Lloyd, disguised as the Mechanic, tried to escape, she used the new staff's magic to stop him, but failed. However, Lloyd was later captured by Mister F.
When the Crystal Council got all four Golden Weapons, Aspheera commences a ritual using the magical abilities from her new staff to convert the Golden Weapons into the Weapons of Destruction, as well as recreating the Overlord's physical form as the Crystal King.
The Spell at the Waterfall (flashback)
The spell used to banish the Forbidden Five eventually reached the Dragon Stone Shrine, where it encountered Wu. Wu introduced the spell to the idea of friendship and family, leading it to transform into a skeleton named Bonzle, who befriended the Finders in the Land of Lost Things.
Dragons Rising, Season 1
To safeguard the secrecy of certain information, including the existence of the Dragon Cores and their role in preventing the MergeQuakes, Ras implemented a curse on the Scroll-Worms. As a result, these worms would display hostility towards anyone who sought to inquire about this knowledge.
The Merge also resulted in the formation of portal gates, mystical gateways that provide entry to the realms. Zane tried to get the one under the Monastery of Spinjitzu to work but discovered it was mystical and not technological, making it difficult to scan.
When Nya, Sora, Riyu, Jiro, and Zanth were searching for a Dragon Core, Nya and Sora ended up falling under a curse designed against those who would abuse djinn artifacts, and were subsequently pursued by Howlers. Unable to defeat them, they retreated, coming across Arrakore's sanctum. Arrakore stated that the Howlers could only be defeated with wish magic. However, with Djinjago - the source of his magic - destroyed, this would be impossible. However, Sora figured out that by having hope, it would allow Arrakore to access his wish magic again. Using Sora and Nya's wishes, Arrakore defeated the Howlers. After the djinn recovered enough to wield wish magic again, he granted Nya's wish for them to be able to find the Dragon Core.
Dragons Rising, Season 2
Upon reaching the Shadow Dojo, Ras instructed Jordana to delve into the Theroxian scrolls to master the intricacies of Theroxian magic. After a while, Jordana successfully harnessed her newfound abilities to dispel the fog, which was actually a border spell that enveloped the Land of Lost Things to capture Bonzle.
Gandalaria used her magical prowess to assist Cole and Zane in fending off the Administration Agents, who were intent on recapturing Zane. Jordana conjured a fierce storm that scattered the ninja throughout the Forest of Spirits.
As the situation escalated, Gandalaria made an attempt to confine Bonzle within a protective container, but her efforts were thwarted by Jordana, who twisted Gandalaria's magic to seal Bonzle away instead. During the Blood Moon ritual, Jordana skillfully used her magic to gain control over Bonzle, forcing her to revert to her spell form. This allowed her to open a magic portal to the Nether-Space, while Ras recited the incantations for the Ritual of the Blood Moon. In the midst of this, Gandalaria channeled her magic to prevent the Cloud Kingdom from plummeting.
When the portal was about to close, Rox released her soul from her body and moved it into Jordana's body, therefore taking possession of the Imperian girl. Later, she effortlessly harnessed her Theroxian magic to take control of Cinder and the Wolf Mask Warriors, unleashing their complete potential as the warriors became infused with Chaos energy. Subsequently, Rox cast a static spell that rendered Nya, Zane, and Cole, as well as the Elemental Earth Mech, completely immobilized, but Jordana eventually managed to break the spell after being released from the evil Elemental Master's possession.
Dragons Rising, Season 3
Arrakore continued to use his wish magic to restore Djinjago. When Rox arrived to have him repair a broken Prismatic Blade, Arrakore refused due to knowing the danger the blade can do in the hands of evil. The Djinn later tricked Rox into wishing the Ninja were here, bringing Nya, Sora, and Riyu to her. He used his wish magic to aid Nya and Sora in defeating Rox and the Dragonian Warriors, wishing one to be light as a feather, a warrior’s helmet to be on backwards, one to be struck by lightning, another to have bones made of jelly, and the last warrior to be trapped in a rubber ball. When Rox captured Arrakore in a timepiece, she forced him to fix the Yellow Prismatic Blade. Rox then had a little fun with her wishes, wishing her opponents to freeze, state their inferiority against the Forbidden Five, and bow before her. However, this gave Sora a chance to use her Technology to destroy the timepiece, forcing Rox and her Dragonian warriors to retreat with the fixed Prismatic Blade. After the victory, Arrakore granted Sora's wish to send them back to their friends.
Dragons Rising, Season 4
Users' abilities
- Mystokinesis - The user can control and bend supernatural forces. In "Spellbound," magic is shown to be both offensive and defensive, such as when Clouse used it to protect himself from Garmadon. Also, users can use magic spells to attack or defend (like in "The Corridor of Elders," when Lloyd uses a spell to bring back the spirits of Anacondrai generals).
- Transmogrification - The user is capable of transmuting matter into different forms by using magic. This allows the user to alter the appearance of living and non-living objects, shown when Clouse transforms some of the training objects in his fight with Garmadon, and when the Anacondrai warriors were transformed into Anacondrai.
- Mysto-Ergokinesis - This allows the user to manipulate, generate, redirect, sense, negate, and project magical energy. If the person is a more powerful being, such as a Djinn or an Oni, then he can manipulate the energy that can cast a specific effect.
- Mystokinetic Absorption - The user has the ability to absorb magical energy and use it in various ways, gaining some form of advantage.
- Mystokinetic Blast - The user can release blasts of magical energy over a specific target area, causing great damage and/or delivering great shock waves of pure force. These blasts can be strong enough to knock someone back and blast away large objects.
- Mystokinetic Ball Projection - The users of this ability are able to create balls of magical energy that can be dispersive, concussive, or explosive.
- Mystokinetic Vortex Generation - The user can generate spirals/vortices composed of magical energy. The vortex can be projected as a long-ranged attack or a tornado of the respective form of magical energy for both offensive and/or defensive purposes.
- Mystokinetic Beam Emission - The user can project concentrated beams of magical energy for a range of damage strengths. The result of the beam could be concussive, dispersive, or explosive.
- Mystokinetic Bolt Projection -The user can create bolts of magical energy and control the intensity/power of their projectiles. These bolts could be used to stun, burn, injure, or even penetrate/stab the enemy, and they can be fired in short sequence.
- Mystokinetic Constructs - The user can create tools, objects, weapons, and other items using magic, as seen when Clouse created a giant mech from stone and the Wolf warriors get claw gauntlets when empowered by the Gong of Shattering, or energy claws when empowered by Rox.
- Mysto-Flyrogenesis - The user can create shields of varying shapes and sizes out of pure magical energy that are capable of blocking various attacks to protect themselves. They can possibly use their magical energy shields to imprison people.
- Mystokinetic Aura - The user can create an aura of magical energy around themselves for protection from direct contact.
- Mystokinetic Infusion - The user can infuse themselves or an object with magical energy to increase the strength of their blows.
- Mystokinetic Strike - The user is able to supercharge their strikes with magical energy to have more power in physical attacks.
- Mystokinetic Healing - The user can heal themselves or others by using magical energy. Its efficiency depends on the amount of magic being used or the user's level of mastery.
- Mysto-Telekinesis - The user can control, move, and manipulate objects and matter from great distances by using magic, allowing them to lift someone or something in the air and make them float unassisted, usually to attack or defend against an adversary, as shown in "Boobytraps and How to Survive Them" and "The Explorers Club."
- Paralysis Inducement/Body Immobilization - The user can paralyze someone or something using magic.
- Mysto-Elementumkinesis - Allows the user to magically manipulate other elements and use them in battle. The Dark magic version is more darker as Clouse used this to fight Jay with his stone mech and later utilize a darker version of Nature.
- Mystokinetic Channeling - The user is able to channel their magic and increase their powers by using objects imbued with magical abilities so that they can perform more magic or cast spells to locate and observe people, places, and things and to manipulate magic.
- Mystokinetic Incantation/Spell casting - A user can cast and summon magical spells, curses, and enchantments by chanting in an ancient tongue as demonstrated by Clouse as he repeatedly chants incantations to cast powerful spells. This ability can also empower dark magic users as Lord Garmadon said that Dark Magic in the Land of Madness made him stronger, thus giving him his four arms.
- Magic Enchantment - User has the ability to put enchantments on something/someone; a type of spell that has power over others to alter and enhance the properties of things using magic to permanently or temporarily endow any kind of quality, ability, asset, etc, to others or themselves to accomplish their goals which can come in a variety of spells from illusions, shapeshifting, bestowals and so on. Lord Garmadon said that Dark Magic in the Land of Madness made him stronger, thus giving him his four arms in "Once Bitten, Twice Shy".
- Curse Inducement - Users have the ability to cast a curse on anything they desire, a negative supernatural effect, on whatever they wish (people, places, objects, etc.). Some instances include sending someone to the Cursed Realm through the utilization of the Book of Spells or abusing a Djinn artifact, leading to the individual being hunted down by a Howler. Curses are also well known to create and induce supernatural anomalies capable of warping reality too, such as dimensional rifts appearing on any surface like the ceiling, wall, or floor, and among other things like various objects appearing out of thin air, etc.
- Animation - The user can use their magical power to animate inanimate objects. Clouse used this to animate statues, sculptures, and drawings into very powerful dark creatures under his control.
- Wish Granting - The user, usually a djinn, is able to grant wishes to another or himself. The effects manifest in the form of yellow sparks or magical energy balls.
- Weapon Creation - As seen with Arrakore, the user can create weapons by granting wishes.
- World Restoration - The user can restore destroyed realms with each wish they grant. Arrakore used this to restore his home realm Djinjago bit by bit.
- Resurrection - The user can revive dead beings with the help of another individual, such as when Arrakore worked with Zanth to revive the tan half of the Arc Dragon of Focus.
- Self-Duplication - As shown by Nadakhan, the user can use their magic to make copies of themselves.
- Mystoportation - This allows the user to teleport whenever and wherever they desire via magical smoke/dust/mist or teleporting quickly.
- Remote Teleportation - The user can teleport other beings from one place to another. The Omega used this to bring some of the Oni to his location.
- Mysto-Shapeshifting - The user can use their magic abilities to shapeshift into what they want, changing their appearance and the clothes they are currently wearing and replicating the form of the person they change into. As mentioned by Iron Baron, the Oni can shapeshift into anyone as demonstrated by Mystake when she assumed Harumi's identity. However, it won't protect them when they're in a dragon's presence because they can sense and smell Oni.
- Animal Morphing - The user can shapeshift into animals, both real or mythical, as seen when Mystake appeared in "The Gilded Path", disguised as a rat.
- Voice Imitation - While shapeshifting, the user is able to mimic the voice of the person they turn into. As demonstrated by Mystake disguised as Harumi, the user can manipulate and mask their voice to sound exactly like the person they've changed into.
- Realm Travel/Dimensional Travel - As displayed by the Realm Crystal, it has the power to travel through any realms (except the Departed Realm). Some magical rituals allow the user to travel freely through all of the realms.
- Magic Portal Creation - This was seen when Clouse chanted a foreign incantation to open a portal to the Cursed Realm in an attempted to banish Garmadon but ended up being banished there himself by the latter. A user can also open up portals to other realms by use of incantations.
- Soul/Container Imprisonment - As demonstrated by Nadakhan with the Teapot of Tyrahn and the Djinn Blade, the user is able to imprison the souls of others in objects. Later, Rox used this to trap Arrakore inside a timepiece.
- Abjuration/Banishment - The user is able to banish or send someone/something to another realm and time. As demonstrated in "Battle Between Brothers", Wu's black kimono had magic symbols which acted like a protection spell against evil, thus banishing Garmadon to the underworld. In the past, Garmadon used the Book of Spells to banish the Anacondri Generals to the Cursed Realm. Later, Nadakhan used this power to banish Clancee, Doubloon, and Monkey Wretch.
- Megethoskinesis - As demonstrated by Ghosts and Djinns like Arcturus and Nadakhan, magic users have the ability to manipulate the size of other beings, such as enlarging them or altering their own size to make themselves smaller.
- Summoning - As shown with the Allied Armor of Azure, the user has the ability to summon ghosts as their ally. Using Dark Magic, Nineko can summon monsters from various parts of the island of Ninjago.
- Weapon summoning - The user can summon weapons from thin air or from a distance. This was first shown in "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," where Garmadon summoned four weapons (a bo staff, a double-bladed dagger, a staff with shurikens, and a scythe) from a distance. He later summoned four katanas by pulling them out from his back in "The Royal Blacksmiths." Nadakhan demonstrated this by summoning four daggers. As demonstrated by Mystake in "Saving Faith," this power allows the user to create weapons (swords, whips, drills, nets, or in Mystake's case, staffs) through Dark Magic.
- Shadow summoning - As shown with Garmadon, Clouse, and Tanabrax, the user is able to summon shadows, a type of ethereal being that can be formed from somebody's shadow, becoming a featureless and transparent black copy of the template with glowing red eyes. Armed with shadow copies of whatever weapons their template was holding at the time, shadows are invulnerable to physical blows, able to harm physical beings while the latter could not do the same and are capable of duplicating themselves, although they are susceptible to blasts of Elemental energy, other shadows, and Golden Power. Similarly, they have the ability to use their powers to create a shadow duplicate of themselves in order to interact with the world to some extent.
- Magical Illusions - As seen with Master Yang, the user can cast magical illusions, allowing them to create entirely fabricated constructs realistic enough that those who enter them will believe what they see is real.
- Elemental Power Absorption - A user can absorb an elemental power from another person or object and gain its abilities. Aspheera used this on Kai and Nya to get their powers of Fire and Water.
- Necromancy - This allows the user to bring back the dead in the form of zombies or re-awakened skeletons, such as the Pyro Vipers, the Re-Awakened, or Grief-Bringer.
- Magical Empowerment - Users become stronger when they come in contact with their own and/or somebody else’s magic, possibly unlocking abilities related to the affinity and enhancing the existing powers.
- Evil Transformation/Corruption Inducement - When touched with a dark magical artifact like the Skull of Hazza D'ur, it can transform the wielder's appearance into an evil state and corrupt their character.
- Magical Flight/Levitation - As shown with the Skull of Hazza D’ur, the user has the ability to fly and levitate through magic. This allows them to lift themselves off the ground and remain suspended in the air indefinitely, and even move through the air freely and control their altitude.
- Longevity/Agelessness - Aspheera, Djinns, and Gandalaria, despite being hundreds or thousands of years old, maintain their youthful appearance through magic.
- Tempestagenesis - The user can create storms, including heavy rain, thunder and lightning, and strong winds. This was seen when Jordana managed to summon a powerful storm that knocked the Bounty off course.
- Soul Projection/Transferal - The user can project their souls from their bodies and into other people’s bodies. This was seen when Rox released her soul from her body and moved it into Jordana’s body in order to escape as the Nether-Space portal was closing.[17]
- Possession - The user can possess other people. This was seen when Rox (after transferring her soul to Jordana's body) was able to possess the Imperian girl in months.
- Psychic link - The user has the ability to establish a physical link between their body and the host they are inhabiting. This was demonstrated when Rox, while controlling Jordana, formed a physical connection between the Merged Realms and the Nether Space. Additionally, other members of the Forbidden Five utilized Rox's body to communicate with both her and Nokt.
- Possession - The user can possess other people. This was seen when Rox (after transferring her soul to Jordana's body) was able to possess the Imperian girl in months.
- Clairvoyance - The user can view things while not physically being there.
- Spell Manipulation - The user can manipulate spells, such as when Jordana took control of Bonzle, reverted her to her true form, and made her open the gateway to the Nether-Space.
- Spell Negation - The user can also negate spells, such as when Jordana broke the spell that bound the Finders to the Land of Lost Things and later the static spell that Rox had cast on the Ninja.
- Dowsing - The user can locate anything that are hidden, as seen when Rox traced one of the Prismatic Blades' location underwater.
- Soul/Life Force Consumption - The user can absorb souls/life force by using magic. This was demonstrated by Thunderfang, who is able to absorb souls/life force to increase his power.

Djinjagan Wish Magic
Djinjagan Wish Magic
Djinns and Djinjagan Dragons possess their own form of magic fueled by their homeland Djinjago[21] that allows them to grant three wishes for other beings. There are different levels of wish magic[22] depending on the connection a djinn has with Djinjago,[23] and wish magic is heavily dependent on the djinn who uses it.[24] Nevertheless, wish magic is governed by specific regulations to prevent wish magic from being abused,[25] prohibiting the fulfillment of wishes for more wishes, love, and harm towards others. If a djinn breaks a djinn law, restrictions will be imposed on their wish magic.[25] Djinns can't grant wishes to other djinns.[26] Furthermore, it carries a sinister aspect, exemplified by the transformation of Tanabrax, a once ordinary puppeteer, into a malevolent shadow entity. The misuse of djinn artifacts also triggers a curse upon the individual responsible. It is usually associated with orange, blue, and purple.

Trivia
- Djinns and Oni are born with magic abilities, while other magic users learned them.
- Chris "Doc" Wyatt confirmed that a non-elemental Djinjagan magical ability relates to changing the size of living things.[27] It's inferred that the ability works on non-living objects as well.
- Djinn Magic depends on the size and growth of the Realm of Djinjago. This was not the case in Skybound when Nadakhan could grant wishes regardless despite the destruction of the realm. This is presumably due to the realms being separated at the time.
- Though Fungus' powers may appear to be magic, he more likely uses alchemy.[28]
- According to Tommy Andreasen, "there is such a thing as good magic."[20]
- This was confirmed in The Curse of the Cat-Eye Jewel.
- Magic is not an elemental power or an elemental essence.[29]
- However with magic, it is possible to emulate the Elemental Powers, which is shown when Fungus freezes the Lava Monster in "Dungeon Crawl!", or when Gandalaria produces lightning attacks.[30]
- Upon being asked on Bluesky if Gandalaria can use magic without her crystal ball, Chris "Doc" Wyatt stated, "Not all spells use crystal balls. There are potions, hexes, etc. Various kinds of magic, used in various kinds of ways. Some require different power items, some require no items at all."[5]
- This was actually seen in "Secrets of the Wyldness."
- Magic is not related to Source Dragon energy.[31]
